What a fantastic trip this year! The LADS organised a wonderful Architecture trip to Barcelona to explore the wonders of the city… From the 20th-26th March we visited Barcelona, visiting sights such as Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell, Barcelona Pavillion, Casa Mila and Batin, Gothic Quarter.
On Friday 23 March, De Montfort University (DMU), Leicester hosted the first RIBA East Midlands pan-school charrette with students from all six of the region’s schools of Architecture taking part.
The event was organised as part of the work of the RIBA East Midlands member-led Education Group on which all of the Schools are represented, alongside practice-based members. The charrette was inspired by the highly successful Northern Soul model (which takes place each year in the northern regions). It is hoped that this will be the first of many such events in the East Midlands.
The morning started with a presentation from Grant Butterworth, Head of Planning at Leicester City Council, providing some context for the brief which focused on the City’s historic Corah buildings to the North of the city’s retail and commercial centre. Students then headed out on a site visit before starting work on their designs after lunch.
A total of 55 students attended the charrette, along with teaching staff, and were divided into mixed university and year groups, working in teams of five or six.
Students attended from all of the region’s schools of Architecture: De Montfort University, Leicester; Loughborough University; Nottingham Trent University; University of Derby; University of Lincoln and the University of Nottingham. They worked throughout the afternoon on their ideas before pin up, final presentations and judging.
Once all of the final presentations had taking place, the judges (Grant Butterworth; RIBA East Midlands Education Group Chair, Richard Crowson and Leicestershire and Rutland (LRSA) Joint President, Sylvester Cheung), spent over half an hour deliberating in order to choose the winning team.
The charrette was followed by a social for participants on the school of Architecture’s open-air terrace with views out to the city.
The charrette was generously sponsored by Ibstock and the LRSA.
This year for International Womens Day we celebrated women in Architecture by screening She Draws She Builds along with the RIBA Portland Place and many other locations around the country. The screening was sponsored by Forterra and we had an excellent attendance of students and Lincolnshire Architects. Another excellent coming together of the University and practice with great conversation and positive atmosphere for all who came!
We are organising an event in July to celebrate Ethel Day, celebrating Ethel Mary Charles the first female member of the RIBA!
